Birmingham School Portraits

About

Welcome!

My name is Mary  Tweedy and I own a boutique photography studio located in Helena, AL that  specializes in newborns, children and family photography !:) .

Birmingham School Portraits is a subdivision of Mary Tweedy Photography and it is specializing in modern and fresh school portraits photography

My goal is to provide a custom, boutique experience to all families attending the schools who have chosen me to photograph their students. My service is personal and professional. Unlike large, corporate photography operations, I only take on a few, select schools so that I can provide superior customer service and artistic images.

I never force a smile and simply aim to capture the essence of the children I photograph. No awkward poses or faces, just the authentic child, on the day. The results are genuine and timeless portraits that are far from the traditional cheesy photos we have become accustomed to with bright flashes and unflattering, busy backgrounds.  I provide light and fun experience for your children and take pride in providing an environment where the kids can relax and be themselves, naturally.

WHY WORK WITH ME?

I am a completely online operation. Families are linked to password-protected online ordering galleries. Galleries are set up according to grade, homeroom, advisory, or whatever grouping which makes sense for the school. Each child will be provided 2-5 images, presented in both color and black and white. The family may chose the photos they want printed, as opposed to having a pose chosen for them. I also provide boutique product choices such as canvas gallery wraps and digital images for future printing and archiving. A detailed PDF describing all ordering procedures and shooting day preparation will be provided to each school to be distributed to families prior to photo day.

Prints are shipped directly to the family home; no more photo packages getting lost in cubbies or lockers.

I like to focus on a-la-carte ordering so parents can order the prints that they wish, however packages can be designed for schools if that is what the schools desire.

I provide all equipment and personnel needed for photo day.

I provide the school with all high resolution digital files to use for yearbooks, website, school advertising, school ID’s, or however the school wishes to use the images.

I handle any questions from parents and families about ordering and products.

I take staff photos and provide a discounted print package for staff members as well.

I am willing to work with schools to provide custom services that fit your unique needs.

HOW MANY STUDENTS CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE?

I have provided this service to schools as small as 60 and am ready to work with schools with as many as 1000 children. I have worked with kids ages 1-18 in my boutique school photography arena.

ARE THESE IMAGES EXPENSIVE?

I have competitive rates and nothing is due up front, all profit is made from ordering. I offer a variety of collections and a-la-carte products to fit everyone’s needs.

I also donate 10% of the net profit to the schools that I photograph!

WHAT TIME OF YEAR DO YOU CONDUCT THESE FINE ART SCHOOL PHOTO SHOOTS?

I work with each individual school to schedule shoots any time during the academic year.

FAQ

Tell me a little about the process.

I offer parents a more custom, candid and boutique option for school portraits than your average school portrait provider. I  pride myself on capturing a technically sound photographs that accentuates each child’s individual personality. I don’t like the word “cheese” – and I do not believe in forcing a smile. I thrive on authenticity and natural expressiveness. I believe I have a service that parents crave for marking these fleeting school memories and we know that this program is a definite value added to your school. I shoot all the portraits myself and let my online digital system take care of ordering and processing payments. I minimally interrupt classroom schedules and provide a unique product to your families through our innovative portrait system.

What do you need from the school?

I will need just a few items from you, including classroom rosters, daily classroom schedules, a map of the school, and a list of any special instructions or sensitive information you think may be pertinent. Also, if your school utilizes a mass email system to notify parents of various announcements, I would love to take advantage of that once or twice during this process to remind and encourage participation in our program. If additional items pop up along the way, I will be sure to communicate those needs with you.

Where do you take the pictures?

My first choice will be outdoors,  preferably under some type of canopy or breezeway, but of course, being a full service operating studio I can set up indoors with professional light system in a room/space that you and I will choose together. I would like to work with you in the weeks preceding our shoot to determine together the best possible places for shooting. Safety is my first priority, second only to ideal lighting conditions, which are best achieved by the use of natural sunlight.

Will we have to re-schedule for inclement weather?

Like I mentioned earlier, I would prefer to shoot outdoors if at all possible, but in the case where there are thunderstorms or unsafe conditions, it may be in our best interest to select an appropriate room inside the school. Clouds will not deter us, unless it is extreme cloud cover. Rain will only keep me from shooting if it is intense and windy. I will make every effort to stay on schedule despite the weather.

How do parents pay you?

My entire system is hosted online. Proofs are released for viewing through an online link, and all orders and payments are processed online. The school does not have to worry about printed proofs, order forms, or handling/processing money. My online system takes care of everything.

How long does the whole process take?

After I shoot the pictures, it will take approximately 3-6 weeks before proofs are released to the parents. The order deadline will be listed for one week after proof release. Once all orders are in, products will begin to arrive 2-4 weeks later. I will personally deliver all of the products to the school, unless the parents choose for the orders to be delivered at their home.

What does it cost for the families?

I offer both print packages as well as digital negatives, where parents can print themselves. Print packages start at  $35, and our digital negative collections begin at $35 as well. I also offer custom studio products, such as gallery wraps and framed enlargements.

Do you have a contract?

I do have a simple contract which outlines the basic services we provide to your school, as well as details on the revenue share with your school. The contract covers basic topics such as safety, liability, logistics, payments, and scheduling. I am more than happy to provide a copy of said contract for your review.

Do you partner with the school on revenue?

I am happy to provide your school with 10% of all net profits. Please allow up to 6 weeks after delivery of school products to receive this gift.

Will the school need to hire an assistant for you?

The school will not need to change anything to accommodate me. I will be present during our shooting day(s) with at least one additional assistant in addition to the primary shooter.

How many options do parents get?

I offer 4 different print packages and 2 different digital negative collections. I also offer custom gallery wraps up to 30”x40” and framed studio enlargements.

Do parents have to participate?

Participation is not required. I will shoot portraits for every child on campus, and provide proofs for each child we photograph. Proofs will be provided digitally and because of this your teachers will not have to worry about collecting un- purchased proofs or order forms. If parents do not want to participate, they are not obligated.
